Test Equipment Probes

Probes used with network analyzers and other test equipment should be matched to the bandwidth. A rule of thumb it that the probes should at least match if not exceed the bandwith of the network analyzer. If possible, buy a 10X probe, which has a 10:1 attenuation setting. This will reduce circuit loading and increase overload protection.

For high-speed signals in excess of about 200MHz, passive test equipment probes are hindered by the capacitance of the cable going into the analyzer. This problem is solved by using an active probe that has FET buffer amplifiers built into the tips.

When measuring high-voltage power signals above around 100V, consider using a differential amplifier probe for isolation.
